TRIBUTES will be paid at all levels of the English rugby pyramid this weekend in memory of an Evesham ace who died after scoring a try during a game in Warwickshire.
Jack Jeffery, 27, lost his life at Coventry’s Walgrave Hospital on Saturday (February 12) in the aftermath of scoring for Evesham RFC seniors in their fixture with Berkswell and Balsall.
He was injured in a challenge while scoring, a tackle described as ‘accidental’ by his heartbroken sister Daisy. The cause of his death has not yet been revealed.
Speaking ahead of a minute’s applause in Jack’s memory at Worcester Warriors home clash with Bristol Bears tomorrow (Friday), devoted dad Glenn said: “Jack passed away doing the thing that he loved the most, playing rugby.
“Jack was the most kind-hearted, generous and beautiful son who enriched the lives of everyone who was lucky to know and have met him.
“Thank you to everyone who has contacted and sent us such kind thoughts and lovely words. This truly means so much and is a comfort to us in these very difficult times,” he added.
Shocked town rugby bosses have joined Jack’s family in paying tribute at the kindness shown since the tragedy.
“We cannot even begin to describe the love and affection displayed to Jack, his family and our club,” a statement read.
“We want you all to know how truly grateful for each and every one of your messages of support.
Although he lives in East London, club chairman David Summerfield said Evesham remained close to Jack’s heart.
“He would often return from London for training and was always at the heart of club activities,” he said.
“He served his club, his teammates and the county with distinction and provided much satisfaction to the club supporters in knowing exactly where the whitewash was.”
Jack earned his first county cap just two weeks ago – his number 11 shirt has now been retired by Worcestershire and Herefordshire RFU bosses.
In addition to tributes from across the world including World Rugby chief and former Lions skipper Bill Beaumont, Warriors confirmed the minute’s applause before kick off would be held at the request of Jack’s family.
“Warriors have sent letters of condolence to Jack’s family and to the Evesham club which are the many tributes that have been paid from across the rugby world.
Sports Minister and Evesham’s MP Nigel Huddleston said: “Very sorry to hear about the tragic death of Jack Jeffery who was injured while playing for Evesham Rugby Club.
“My deepest sympathies go to his family, friends and teammates. The outpouring of messages shows how incredibly popular he was.”
