Trio have designs on success

A TRIO of youngsters have received prizes from the Mayor of Worcester for their Fairtrade poster designs on how UK food prices effect third world farmers.

Coun Paul Denham announced eight-year-old Asha Mahanta, from St. George’s RC Primary School, as the winner of the annual poster competition, with five-year-old Delcy Ben, from Perrywood Primary School, coming second and 11-year-old Santa Belkina, from Hollymount School, coming third, on Wednesday (March 8) at the Guildhall.

The competition aims to raise awareness of how food is produced and the effect that UK price wars can have on third world farmers, producers and communities.

The entries were judged by the Mayor and Anthony Wood, chair of the Worcester Fairtrade Justice Network.

Worcester gained Fairtrade Town status in 2006, and there are now more than 4,500 Fairtrade products available, from coffee, tea and chocolate to bananas, flowers and even gold.

Coun Denham said: “It’s been a real pleasure to judge this Fairtrade poster competition, which celebrates the creativity and artistic talent of children in Worcester’s schools.

“This annual event encourages pupils to think about where their food comes from, and the human cost to ensure products arrive on our shelves at a price we regard as competitive.”
