Turning spotlight on the Civil War

Worcester Editorial 3rd Aug, 2015 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

RESIDENTS are being given the opportunity to travel back in time to the Civil War during the August Bank Holiday.

Worcester’s Commandery will give visitors the full Battle of Worcester experience from Saturday (August 29) until Monday (August 31).

Between 10am and 5pm they will recreate the upheaval of the building being transformed from the Wylde family home to the Civil War Battle Headquarters.

Participants will encounter a 17th Century living camp, sign up and be recruited by the King’s Soldiers, and take part in military training and battle preparation.

They will be charged with the protection of The Commandery and searching out the spy within the camp and deciding his fate.

There will also be an audio tour and the Medieval Painted Chamber will be open to all to see more treasures from the era.

Sarah Bourne, Commandery events organiser, said: “We want to give all our visitors a taste of what life was like in Worcester over that fateful time in 1651. The Commandery played such an important role during this most dramatic time in the city’s history.

“Events are on each day over the Bank Holiday weekend and there is something for all the family, we hope it will attract Worcester residents and visitors to our historic city.”

Entry to the event is free to Commandery card holders and residents who can provide a copy of a Worcester City Council tax bill.

Visitors tickets cost £5.50 for adults, £2.50 for children and family passes cost £13.
