WORCESTER will take to the international sporting stage this summer when five of the world’s leading women’s wheelchair basketball teams descend on the city for the 2016 Continental Clash tournament.

The University of Worcester Arena will host the prestigious competition from Monday (August 1) to Thursday (August 4) and will feature Team GB, as well as Germany, Canada, The Netherlands and France.

City residents will have the chance to see Team GB compete on home soil for the last time ahead of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, which takes place less than 40 days after.

The tournament will be looking to build on the impact of the 2015 European Wheelchair Basketball Championships, which led to more than 300 people across West Midlands taking up the sport.

Miles Thompson, GB Women’s head coach said: “The Continental Clash now forms a staple part of our yearly calendar, providing us with the invaluable opportunity to compete against some of the world’s best teams at our home base in Worcester.

“The support we continue to have from the local community is fantastic and we look forward to everyone joining us again at this great event.”

Helen Freeman, GB Women’s co-captain said: “The support we had at the European Championships last year was great, so to be able to play in front of a home crowd again before heading out to Brazil is fantastic.”

The competition will feature 12 matches and tickets range from £2 to £12.
