VIDEO: New walking and cycling bridge moved into place

A BRAND new walking and cycling bridge was lifted into place last weekend over a section of Worcester’s Southern Link Road.

The bridge, which replaces the current pedestrian crossing, now sits proudly over Hams Way and once complete, will allow improved crossing of this busy road for pedestrians and cyclists.

The bridge was built offsite and was carefully manoeuvred into place on Saturday 12 September. Following the successful completion of the move, Hams Way was fully reopened, ahead of schedule.

Coun Ken Pollock, cabinet member for Economy and Infrastructure for Worcestershire County Council, said: “It’s good to see another key part of this scheme being put into place.

It’s certainly an impressive structure and when it’s opened, will further enhance walking and cycling routes in and around the city.”

The bridge is one of four new crossings to be installed as part of the scheme to dual the A4440 Southern Link Road from the M5 to Powick roundabout.

These crossings include Crookbarrow Way Footbridge, which has been extremely well used since opening earlier this year, Broomhall Way Footbridge which is currently under construction, and a new underpass near the Ketch roundabout and this Hams Way Footbridge near the Powick roundabout, which forms part of National Cycle Network Route 46.

Following the installation of the bridge, further work is needed before the bridge becomes operational.
