A GROUND-BREAKING survey has been launched to explore residents’ perceptions on the importance of heritage in Worcester’s city centre.
The findings will contribute to decisions on how the city’s historic character can best be preserved and protected in the future.
Worcester’s Historic City Conservation Area was designated in 1969 and covers most of the city centre; it extends south from the railway line to the canal at Diglis Basin, between the River Severn and City Walls Road.
“Worcester’s heritage is a major draw for many visitors, helping in turn to boost the city’s economy,” said Coun Lucy Hodgson, chair of the City Council’s Place and Economic Development Sub Committee.
“This survey will help us to establish what aspects of Worcester’s heritage residents value the most, and to identify new opportunities to preserve and protect the city’s unique character for future generations to enjoy. I urge everyone who lives or works in Worcester to give us their views.”
A ‘Historic City’ writing competition is also open for children aged from four to 16 years old. Council chiefs are looking for original stories or poems inspired by a place, building or event which took place in Worcester’s historic city centre.
Winners in each age category will receive a £20 gift voucher to spend in the Worcester Museum and Art Gallery gift shop. The deadline for entries is Monday, September 28.
