WORCESTER’s first Asian Mayor has finally been committed to canvas, 18 years after he was first elected to the role.
Coun Allah Ditta made history when he was named Worcester’s first citizen in 2004 in a move which he believes opened up the city to the Asian community in Worcester and beyond.
And now he had been captured in a portrait – funded entirely by his own member’s allowance – to recognise the historic moment.
Since his election, the number of councillors from an Asian background has increased on both sides of the Guildhall and the Cathedral councillor hopes the diverse nature of Worcester’s politics will only increase further.
“Worcester has a great deal of history, I’m only a dot in it but I believe there is so much more we can do,” he said.
“I’ve been endearing to get members of the Polish community and all of the groups we have here because the wider the representation, the better we serve our residents.”
