A CHARITY which supports deaf children has received £2,000 in funding to help give nine youngsters a place in its Youth Camp.
Deaf Direct recently received the funding from Provident Home’s ‘Good Neighbour Community Programme’ following a public vote, which will enable nine deaf children to learn new skills, have fun and boost confidence through activities such as canoeing, abseiling and surfing.
The Youth Camp also provides vital skills such as communication techniques and improves leadership skills, so they are able to succeed after leaving education.
The Good Neighbour Community Programme recognises projects and organisations which make a difference to their local communities and during 2015, invested more than £1million to good causes across the UK.
Philip Gerrard, chief executive of Deaf Direct, said: “Thank you to everyone who voted for our Youth Camp project. Deaf children can often be left out of activities because of the stigma surrounding hearing loss.
“The scheme shows deaf children that it’s ok to wear hearing aids and that it does not prevent you achieving the things you want in life. Thank you for changing the lives of nine deaf children and for giving them the opportunity to reach their potential.”
Andy Parkinson, Provident Home credit director, said: “It’s great to see such a deserving organisation come top of the public vote to win funding from our Good Neighbour Programme. We feel proud to be able to help support the charity with their fantastic work.”
