City draw blank in Oxford stalemate

WORCESTER City were held to their second successive draw as they fired a blank at ten-man Oxford City last night (Tuesday).

The Blue and Whites failed to build on their opening-day 2-2 stalemate with Stalybridge Celtic and were held 0-0 by Justin Merritt’s men, despite Alesandro-Adrian Santiago seeing red for a rash challenge on Daniel Nti.

Substitute Daniel Udoh almost grabbed an injury-time winner for the visitors, but his deflected effort into the side netting was as close as City came.

After a slow start to proceedings, Oxford carved out the first major opportunity of the game after 25 minutes but Felipe Barcelos somehow missed the target from five-yards out.

Barcelos was causing City all sorts of problems and he drove an effort from the edge of the box which was spilled by Vaughan, but the visiting keeper reacted brilliantly to keep out Adi Yussuf’s follow-up.

Mike Symons, returning to Marsh Lane after leaving the club in the summer, thought he had opened the deadlock on the half-hour mark but his effort was ruled out for offside.

The Aggborough-outfit grew in confidence after the break and were given a major boost after 73 minutes when Santiago was given his marching orders for a nasty challenge on Nti.

Udoh was inches away from sending Worcester home with all three points but his strike took a nick and hit the wrong side of the net.

Carl Heeley’s men will look to secure their first league win of the season when they make the long trip up to Guiseley on Saturday (August 6).
