City in good form to face pacesetters

Worcester Editorial 26th Jan, 2019   0

LEAGUE leaders Ilkeston Town are next on the fixture list for Worcester City after John Snape’s men continued their winning ways with victory over South Normanton Athletic.

City go into the game on the back of a 2-1 win in the Midland League Premier Division against their lowly Derbyshire opponents and having beaten Ilkeston at the Victoria Ground in October.

Goals from James Baldwin, Matt Birley and Jordan Harrison handed City all three points on the day and Snape’s men will be seeking a similar confidence boosting with their trip to the East Midlands.

With two and even three games in hand on many of the teams above them, victory for the eighth-placed Blue and Whites would inject momentum into their campaign as the season reaches its closing stages.

City go into the clash at the New Manor Ground on the back of two wins in a week.

A 5-0 mauling of Studley in the Midland Football League Cup last Tuesday (January 15) was followed by Saturday’s hard-fought 2-1 home success against South Normanton.

Goals from captain George Forsyth and Liam Lockett handed City the three points despite a second-half penalty from Kieran O’Connell for the visitors.

But as the visitors sought an equaliser they were reduced to 10 men and the dismissal ultimately helped City to see out the remaining 20 minutes.

After Saturday’s game at Ilkeston, City return to the Victoria Ground to face Coventry Sphinx the following Saturday (February 2).
