City welcome back hero Vaughan for fourth time

Rob George 14th Dec, 2017   0

LEGENDARY Worcester City keeper Nathan Vaughan has once again returned to Worcester City following a short spell at Chester.

The popular shot-stopper returns to the club having departure in the summer of 2016 to Solihull Moors.

Vaughan, one of the heroes of Worcester City’s historic FA Cup runs, has rejoined the club on a deal until the end of the season which will see him compete with Matt Gwynne for the number one jersey.

It will be the fourth time Vaughan has joined City, including two loan spells from Moors last term and from Kidderminster.

Vaughan started his career as a trainee with Plymouth Argyle and has had spells at Newport County, Evesham, Redditch, Halesowen Town, Leamington and Kidderminster.

Before leaving City in the summer of 2016 for promoted Moors, Vaughan had written himself into City folklore after saving a penalty in the 2-1 Cup first round win against Coventry City in November 2014.

The 36-year-old, who combines football with his job at Jaguar Land Rover, also produced an outstanding performance in the following round against Scunthorpe United.

He was between the sticks for Worcester’s record-breaking penalty shoot-out against the Iron which they lost 14-13 in December 2014.

It was the longest penalty shoot-out in FA Cup history

His return reunites him with fellow giant killers Tyler Weir and Wayne Thomas who both in the side for the historic win at the Ricoh Arena.

Vaughan is available for Saturday’s clash with Shawbury United and a City spokesman thanked Chester for rushing through the deal.

CITY welcome Shawbury United to the Victoria Ground on Saturday after a three-week break from action.

The Blue and Whites last played on November 25 but last Saturday’s trip to AFC Wulfrunians was postponed because of the wintry weather.

Tuesday’s re-arranged trip to Stourport Swifts was also called off because of snow and ice.

City will be looking for revenge against Shropshire side Shawbury, having lost 2-1 away to their lowly visitors in October when a goal from Alex Tomkinson wasn’t enough to spare Lee Hughes and John Snape’s men from another defeat on the road.

The fixture will kick off a packed festive programme for City with the highlight being the derby games with landlords Bromsgrove Sporting.

Boxing Day’s home game will kick off at 3pm and City chiefs have confirmed there will be no segregation and turnstiles will open at 1.30pm.

The Social Club and Dance Studio will be open from 1.30pm but fans are being advised that due to the large attendance expected doormen will turn people away once the capacity of these areas has been reached.

Mince pies and mulled apple juice will also be sold from the club shop gazebo and more details on the club’s partnership with Worcester Foodbank will be revealed ahead of the clash.
