YOUNG pace ace Dillon Pennington has revealed it is time for him to shake off the ‘young player’ tag and produce key performances for Worcestershire CCC.

The 22-year-old fast bowler played a major role on day three of the LV=Insurance County Championship match with Derbyshire at New Road, which Worcestershire dominated.

Pennington claimed his 50th first-class victim and achieved career-best figures of 4-44 before bettering that by picking up five wickets when Derbyshire followed on.

Pennington said: “It was a great day for the lads. We’ve been working really hard throughout this summer, so it was nice to get some rewards.

“The catches stuck, and it’s a nice feeling as a group to get where we want to be.

“Thirteen wickets in the day is very pleasing. We put the ball in the right area for long enough periods, and we worked well as a team.

“Fielding as a unit was awesome, and everything came together out there, and it’s great to be in a really good position.”

“In terms of myself, it’s nice to get some rewards. I was speaking about it at Nottingham, where the team needed me to get some wickets because I hadn’t quite done that yet.

“I want to be as good as I can be and perform for the team, and I want to do that in as many games as possible.”

The Pears celebrated their first victory of the season in the LV=Insurance County Championship after overpowering Derbyshire by an innings and 23 runs at New Road.

Derbyshire resumed the final day on 112-6 and lost their last four wickets in just 8.2 overs as they were dismissed for 128.

Pennington completed the first five-wicket haul of his career and finished with figures of 14-4-32-5 in the second innings. It enabled him to enjoy a career-best performance for the second day running after his 4-44 in Derbyshire’s first innings.

He ended with match figures of 33.4-8-76-9 as Worcestershire claimed 23 points to boost their hopes of finishing in the top two. They sit fourth in Group A, 13 points behind leaders Essex.

It was the perfect response to heavy defeats away to Durham and Nottinghamshire.

Durham are the visitors to New Road in the latest round of games from Thursday (June 3) before attention switches to the Vitality Blast on Wednesday (June 9) when the Notts Outlaws visit New Road.
