Gardiner rues missed opportunities

WORCESTER City assistant manager Matt Gardiner highlighted the need for his side to be more clinical in front of goal in their battle to avoid Skrill Conference North relegation.

A whole host of chances went begging for City in their defeat against rivals Gloucester on Saturday, most notably in the second half when Ethan Moore fired over an open goal, and Gardiner knows his side have to start putting the chances away to get points on the board.

“When we’ve got opportunities to hit the target, they’re not difficult chances and we haven’t worked the goalkeeper when it mattered,” he said.

“For all that possession we had in the middle third that cutting edge in the final third was the reason why we lost the game.

“You look at the goals for column and you don’t have to be a football genius to work out that’s where our issues are. The bit I was worried about six or eight games ago was we weren’t creating chances, but now we’re not finishing them off.

“That’s the really good thing about this period whichever way you want to look at it, glass half full or glass half empty, I think it’s the opportunity to put things right very quickly and the lads know what we’ve got to do.”

Worcester have a chance to put the derby defeat behind them when they face table-toppers Solihull Moors at Aggborough on Wednesday (January 1).
