Goal-hungry City bidding to continue with home comforts

GOAL-HAPPY Worcester City will be looking to extend their winning home run when they welcome Highgate United to the Victoria Ground this weekend

Ash Vincent’s men will be in upbeat form after making it 25 goals in six games with the 3-o win over Romulus in Wednesday’s Midland League Premier Division fixture.

The Blue and Whites will seek to improve a run of seven wins from their last eight outings when Highgate are the visitors on Saturday (3pm).

City fought back from 2-1 down to beat Newark Flowserve 3-2 for a fifth successive home victory in an entertaining game at the Victoria Ground last Saturday.

The visitors started on the front foot and they took the lead in the 15th minute when Zak Goodson turned Craig Jones before driving forward to finish at the far post past keeper Dan Jezeph.

City’s best chance in the first half came when Liam Lockett crossed wide from the right but Demetri Brown couldn’t get on the end of it.

On 60 minutes, City introduced Marco Adaggio and Chris Withington and drew level within a couple of minutes. Luke Rowe and Liam Lockett combined well before the latter set Adaggio clear on the edge of the box to curl the ball around keeper Joe Season-Smithard.

City were on top at this point but it was the visitors who took the lead. Luke English was unable to control a pass from Jones and Mitchell Robinson picked up the loose ball, then hit a 70-yard pass to Zak Goodson who beat Jones before firing past Jezeph.

Adaggio thought he had equalised but was ruled offside but on 78 minutes City did draw level. A Lockett free-kick was headed clear to Brown who hit the ball goalwards, striking the back of Jones and into the net to make it 2-2.

City continued their neat build-up play and bagged the winner on 81 minutes. Jordan Harrison, who replaced Brown, was sent clear by Adaggio and he beat the advancing keeper to lob the ball into the net.

Hot-shot Sean Brain was unable to make it four when he was blocked by Season-Smithard and Newark had the chance to nick a point in the dying moments but Jezeph was on hand with an outstanding save to ensure City took all three points.
