Gold: We cannot afford another injury at tighthead

Worcester Editorial 20th Sep, 2017   0

DIRECTOR of rugby Gary Gold admitted he is looking to bring in a tighthead prop to cover for the injured Nick Schonert and Simon Kerrod.

Schonert ruptured the tendons on both sides of his ankle in the first minute of Warriors’ defeat to Wasps, whilst fellow tighhead Kerrod is out for up to two months with a groin injury.

With just Biyi Alo and Gareth Milasinovich left to contest the number three position, the Worcester chief stressed he was searching for a quality replacement but insisted the task was like finding ‘hen’s teeth’.

“We cannot afford another injury at tighthead as we’re down to our last two now. It’s an area we need cover, even if it’s only in the short term until Nick or Simon return,” said Gold.

“They’re both going to be out for a significant period of time, so of course I’ll be looking to get some form of reinforcement in that position.

“It’s a work in progress but I haven’t identified anyone at the moment. If you’re going to replace guys who’re injured, you want to replace them with players of a similar quality, but unfortunately tightheads are like hen’s teeth.

“They’re not just lying around waiting to join the club, but we’re working on it,” he added.

The club suffered further injury setbacks at the hands of Exeter Chiefs on Friday night with hooker Jack Singleton coming off with an injured shoulder just before half-time and fly-half Tom Heathcote sustaining a bang to the head 13 minutes in.

After failing his head injury assessment, Heathcote was forced to spend the rest of the game on the sidelines.
