Invaluable support praised by Wolves boss

WORCESTER Wolves director of basketball Paul James has said the club’s fantastic supporters have played a key part in their rise to the top of the league.

Another large crowd turned out at the University of Worcester Arena on Friday night to see Wolves grind out a close fought 89-85 win against in-form Cheshire Phoenix.

The win was Wolves’ eighth in succession and kept them at the top of the BBL Championship – four points ahead of second placed Leicester Riders who have two games in hand.

Wolves have made the Arena somewhat of a fortress since their move from the University of Worcester, having won six home matches in a row and lost just once there so far this season.

Speaking to the Observer, James said: “The support we have had has been fantastic.

“Their invaluable support has played a huge part in us getting some good wins on the board when we have had to dig deep against some very good teams. I hope many more fans will come and watch us for the remainder of the season.”

Wolves return to action on Sunday when they face London Lions in the first round of the BBL Trophy. The match will be Wolves’ second trip to the Copper Box Arena – the venue used for the 2012 London Olympic Games basketball competition.

“We want to do well in the competitions we play in,” James added.

“Unfortunately we always seem to get a tough draw in the cups. The winner of this game will then be away at Newcastle in the quarter-finals.

“If we are going to win this competition then we will certainly have to do it the difficult way.

“London Lions will be tough opponents and will be keen to get back on the winning trail after losing to Durham Wildcats in the weekend, but we are on a good run at the moment and will go there full of confidence.”
