Jones is sixth City new boy

Worcester Editorial 20th Jun, 2019   0

LONG-SERVING former Bromsgrove Sporting skipper Craig Jones has become the sixth new face at Victoria Ground tenants Worcester City as the Blue and Whites summer revamp continues apace.

The centre half left Sporting in February after seven years of success as the club climbed the divisions which culminated in promotion to the Southern Premier Division next season.

Jones was part of the squad which won successive promotions to the Southern Division One Central and the 2016/17 season which saw Sporting win the title without losing a game, one of his two league titles during his time at the club.

After losing the captain’s armband earlier this year, Jones decided to look for a new challenge and in his column for our sister paper the Bromsgrove Standard in April the defender said he wanted to take to reflect before seeing what’s next.

“I feel like I’ve got a lot to offer but my next move will need to be the right one. Moving clubs isn’t something I’m used to so I’ll take the time I need to ensure I get it right,” he wrote.

Jones addition makes it a half-dozen new faces under new City chief Ash Vincent as Jones follows Jack Jeys, Aaron Birch, Nat Kelly, Demetri Brown and Adam Osbourne in signing on the dotted line for the new Midland Premier Division campaign.

Joel Caines, Jamie Smith, Chris Withington, Luke English, Levi Andoh, Liam Locket, Dan Jezeph and Jordan Harrison are among those from last season’s squad to also pledge their immediate futures to the Blue and Whites.

Speaking after confirming Jones’ signature, Vincent said: “Craig is someone we looked at who had the right leadership skills and a winning mentality we wanted within the squad this season.

“He is a proven winner of this league and the league above and cannot wait to begin working with him.”
