'League title within our grasp' says James

WORCESTER Wolves director of basketball Paul James has said the team’s hopes of winning the BBL Championship is within their grasp following their BBL Trophy exploits in recent weeks.

Wolves, who take on Plymouth Raiders tonight (Friday) at the University of Worcester Arena, made it to their first major final last week when they secured a two-leg semi-final win over Sheffield Sharks – setting up a grand final against Glasgow Rocks next Sunday (March 30).

But Wolves have slipped off top spot in the league with title contenders Newcastle Eagles now leading the Championship after going on an impressive winning run.

But with two games in hand over Newcastle and just two points behind, James believes the club’s chances of landing their first BBL league title is well within reach.

“The focus is well and truly back,” he said. “The guys had a few days’ rest, as we had no game last weekend, so we’re back to it in earnest this week.

“The focus will be on Plymouth this weekend and we know what the situation is with the league and what we have to do.

“It’s still within our grasp and hopefully we won’t have any slip-ups.”

Raiders inflicted Wolves’ first defeat of the season in November in a 74-71 defeat but James said his side won’t be out for revenge, just wanting a win to keep up the title charge.

“I think we put that one to bed last time we played them, to be honest,” he added.

“Hopefully, if we can come out with that intensity, that defensive energy and execution like we had on offence, then we’ll be good.”
