Marskell’s late try sees Wanderers triumph

A MATT Marskell try in the dying seconds secured Worcester Wanderers a thrilling 30-24 win over Chippenham at Allington Field on Saturday.

Wing Kieran Morris also starred as he struck twice in Wanderers’ dramatic victory, which steered them 12 points clear of the drop zone in National Three South West.

After knocking out North Midlands Cup holders Bournville to progress to the last four last week, Wanderers returned to league action in buoyant mood and they soon found themselves in front when Tom Biggs landed a penalty.

Despite Worcester’s encouraging start, it was Chippenham who showed the greater composure and scored the opening try, which they converted.

The hosts added a penalty, but Stuart James’ men responded well as Morris latched on to a pass before sprinting home. Biggs added the extras to level the game at 10-10 at half time.

All the momentum appeared to be with Wanderers as they quickly opened up a 12 point cushion at the start of the second period thanks to tries from Morris and Ollie Meadows.

Worcester seemed to be on course for a comfortable away victory when Biggs slotted home a penalty after Chippenham hit back with a converted try to lead 25-17.

But the visitors made it a tense finish when they went over with five minutes remaining to get within a single point before Marskell scored at the death. In the final passage of play, Morris cleverly chipped in field after a strong run, which bounced into the arms of Marskell who eased over the whitewash to seal the bonus point.
