Pacey Pennell thanks forward pack

WORCESTER legend Chris Pennell insists recent Premiership stats showing he is leading in metres and second in carries is all down to the hard work from the forward pack.

The explosive full back has built-up a clear lead in the metres category of the recent Aviva Premiership stats, having covered 1,325 metres before taking to the field against Harlequins.

The England international had also made 186 carries, second only to Exeter Chiefs’ Thomas Waldrom.

But the Warriors academy prodigy believes the stats only exist because of the influence of his teammates.

“I think I’m lucky as the pressure the boys are putting on up front means we’re getting the ball kicked back to us a lot more, which gives me the chance to run it back,” said the 28-year-old.

“Although the metre stats are quite high, it’s from the hard work up front which allows me to have the frequent opportunities to get the ball in hand and charge.

“Ultimately, all I want to focus on is performing well for Worcester week in and week out,” he added.

Warriors head coach Dyan Ryan said: “I expected Pennell to have the impact he’s had this season. I think the way we set the team up gives him the opportunity to express himself from the back.

“I think the confidence he’s gained within the last five to six weeks is showing us the Chris Pennell of two years ago in the Premiership.”
