Pears move quickly to sign Yorkshire all-rounder after Leach injury

WORCESTERSHIRE have moved to sign Yorkshire all-rounder Matthew Waite for a short-term loan spell.

26-year-old Waite has moved to New Road for two weeks and is available for Thursday’s LV=Insurance County Championship match with Leicestershire at New Road.

He can also play for the Rapids in three Vitality Blast matches away to Notts Outlaws, Lancashire Lightning and Durham.

Waite has been signed after all-rounder Joe Leach suffered a back injury.

Worcestershire Cricket Steering Group Chairman, Paul Pridgeon, said: “Matthew is a bowling all-rounder who bats at seven or eight, a like for like replacement for Joe Leach.

“We felt we needed to bring someone in. He came down to join us on Monday night and will practice with the team before the game.

“He is available for this week’s Championship match and three T20 games, although he can’t play against Yorkshire, and he is someone we’ve admired for a while.”

Leeds born Waite has played eight first class, 22 List A and 17 T20 matches for Yorkshire.

He made his debut aged 18 and, in 2016, was voted Yorkshire’s Young Player of the Year.
