Wanderers’ coach sets survival target

HEAD coach Tom Ryder believes two more wins should secure Worcester Wanderers’ status in National Three South West for another season.

Saturday’s 27-19 defeat at home to Barnstaple was Worcester’s fifth straight loss and they now find themselves just nine points clear of the relegation zone.

Ryder said his young side’s lack of experience was beginning to tell in the second half of the season having made a superb start to life in the fifth tier of England rugby.

However, with three games in hand on many of the teams in their division and with a clash against bottom side Chippenham at Weston Fields on Saturday (3pm), Ryder said he was confident his side can comfortably avoid the drop.

“We probably over performed in the first half of the season and we are now under-performing in the second half,” he said.

“Due to the weather a lot our games were cancelled. so we have not been able to get into much of a rhythm and against Barnstaple and Brixham in the last couple of weeks we have been leading, but then fallen away and that’s our inexperience showing.

“But we just need to get a couple of wins under our belt, starting at home to Chippenham who are bottom of the league on Saturday and we should be pretty much safe, which would be a really good result for us as it is our first year in the national leagues.”
