Warriors handed November date for new Premiership campaign

Worcester Editorial 5th Aug, 2020   0

RUGBY chiefs have confirmed the 2020/21 Gallagher Premiership season will begin on the weekend of November 20-22.

The 2019/20 season will resume on the weekend of August 14-16 with nine rounds of matches, which were postponed because of the Coronavirus pandemic, to be completed.

The final round of matches in the regular season will be played on Saturday, October 3 with the semi-finals on October 10 and the final on October 24.

Premiership clubs will then have a short break before the 2020/21 season gets underway.

Fixtures for the 2020/21 Gallagher Premiership season have yet to be confirmed.

Speaking at today’s press conference, Warriors director of rugby Alan Solomons said: “Between August 15 and September 13 we play seven matches so it’s going to test the squad.”

“There is no way you can expect players who have played in a match to play in another four or five days later so we, and all clubs, will be utilising our full squad. Fortunately we do have reasonable strength in depth.

“A big factor in preparation for the completion of the 2019/20 season is that we have not been able to play the series of friendlies that we would normally play prior to any competitions. That carries with it an element of risk of injuries but there is no alternative because we have to complete the season.”

“These nine games almost become like a pre-season and an opportunity for growth in our squad.”
