Wolves prepare for champions Newcastle in BBL opener

WOLVES director of basketball Paul James has said he will only be able to tell what level his side are at after facing the Newcastle Eagles tonight (Friday).

Wolves begin their 2014/15 British Basketball League Championship campaign at the reigning league champions in a mouth-watering opening season contest.

Tonight’s clash at Sport Central (7.30pm tip-off) will be an early repeat of last season’s BBL Playoff final which saw Wolves come back from behind to win 90-78 at Wembley Arena back in May.

And James, who is looking to clinch more silverware for the club this season, said the opening fixture will prove to be a fascinating test for his new-look side following the signings of several new recruits.

“I think it’s a great game to start the season off with, as the Eagles are the benchmark to judge where you are in the scheme of things,” he said.

“This is a new season and I don’t think that both teams met in the final game of last season is going to have any bearing on the game as both teams have players who were not part of that amazing day.

“Nobody sees us as ‘little old Worcester’ anymore, they see us as a team that is capable of going out there and winning things.

“One thing is for sure – the BBL Championship will not be decided on Friday night.”
